Steve Smart, President-Elect, FSS Board of Directors
Steve Smart was raised in Amarillo and attended Tascosa High School and studied accounting at West Texas State University. Steve worked in the construction sales business for many years. And, as life would have it, all the skills and knowledge he gained there was put to good use at his next job. Steve was the Executive Director of Amarillo Habitat for Humanity for 6+ years. In those years, he was taught one of life’s greatest lessons – how to communicate through the heart.
In 2009, Steve was part of the Jimmy Carter Work Project through Habitat for Humanity Intl., where he and volunteers from all over the world traveled to Chiang Mai, Thailand and built 80 homes in 10 days. In 2012, he traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal, where he drove two hours each day to build another 80 homes in 10 days. While traveling abroad may have changed him, it was volunteers right here in our local community that impacted Steve the most. He witnessed first-hand how volunteers from our own community can selflessly come together to help people in need.
Steve was an integral part of the beginning of Amarillo Recovery from Alcohol and Drugs (ARAD) program, and is also on the Board of Directors of Another Chance House. His involvement with the United Way and other community leaders lead him to serve on the Family Support Services Board of Directors. He saw that FSS was such a diverse agency and appreciated the fact FSS assists domestic violence victims and the affordability of mental health counseling.
Currently, Steve is the Human Resources Director at Kimrad Transport LP. His family time is the most important part of his day. He and his wife are very involved with their daughter’s sporting endeavor, and they are often traveling to tournaments. Steve can also been found hiking or riding his mountain bike in Palo Duro Canyon.
